My time here at Cal has been flying by much too fast. From being offered a leadership role on the UC Berkeley Social Media Advisory Team, to starting communications research with a university professor, to receiving my acceptance letter into the prestigious Haas School of Business undergraduate business program, things have been going well. Once again, thank you to the Andrew Fluegelman Fund for always checking in on me.
—Carmen K. Zheng, 2013 Fluegelman Award Fellow
The Fluegelman Bunnell Award—known as the Andrew Fluegelman Award until 2016—honors the legacy of Andrew Fluegelman (1943-1985) and David Bunnell (1947-2016), two pioneers of technology media who shared a deep belief in the power of computers to make the world a better place. Since 2011, we've been awarding laptops to college-bound San Francisco Bay Area students who have overcome significant economic, social and family hardships, and who have contributed to their communities by participating in after-school and/or community programs.
Equipped with these powerful computers, past Award Fellows have attended such schools as UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UCLA, USC, Tuskegee University, Smith College, Middlebury College, Alcorn State University, and Morgan State University.
"Students in low-income areas shouldn’t have to go through the things I went through. I hope to build study areas in poor neighborhoods where students can go to learn and where they will be safe.”—Jerrel Stancil, 2015 Fluegelman Award Fellow
